Would you like to travel to Europe this summer? This is your survival guide

Must read

Traveling to Europe in the summer is like watching your Pinterest board come back to life in real time. It’s the best time to visit, but it’s the busiest. The weather is warm and sunny, the days are long and filled with Aperol spritz (who can complain?), but for first-time travelers to Europe, knowing what to expect from your adventure can be a bit overwhelming. So if you’re new to Europe, there’s a summer survival guide.

Plan ahead (As it is now)

Summer is the peak of European tourist season. This means that popular destinations can become crowded and prices can be higher than in other times of the year. To avoid long lines and sell out attractions, we recommend planning your itinerary in advance and booking accommodation and tickets in advance. To save money and avoid crowds, consider visiting or traveling to less popular destinations during the shoulder season (late spring or early morning).

If you are traveling to Europe this summer, you will need to book all your accommodations. If you haven’t done so, don’t delay! Search for selected accommodations on Google, cross-check different websites to see better prices and see the best prices (varies for each property). If you can’t find the right one, consider Air BNB or Plum Guide for apartment rentals.

I won’t pack more cleverly

It is important to pack properly as Europe can be hot and sunny in summer. Lightweight and breathable clothing is important, just as important as comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Depending on where you travel, you may want to pack a raincoat or umbrella in the event of a sudden shower (though this is not necessary in many places).

A way to pack for European summer is to have a base layer (jeans, one sweater, one jacket) and 3-5 clothing items, including the clothing items needed to wash more frequently (3 tops, five pairs of pants, five pairs of socks). I’m a huge fan of one pair of shoes throughout my trip. Choose the most comfortable walking shoes.

Skip row

If you plan to visit famous monuments, museums or attractions, you may want to purchase tickets in advance. Advance bookings often allow you to skip the line and enter quickly. These “3 Day Pass” cards are mostly so many, encouraging you to take a deeper look into the city by visiting top museums and attractions. It often includes the ability to skip lines, saving you time.

I’ll wake up early

Of course, this tip continues with everyone, but for me, the best advice I give to all my close friends is to wake up early if you want to experience Europe’s most popular cities. But how quickly are we talking? You can enjoy the sunrise view every morning. You can enjoy the perfect light in your photo and wait a moment to incorporate it all.

Eat like a local

Europe is known for its delicious food and drinks. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy fresh seasonal produce and refreshing drinks. It samples local specialties such as Spanish paella, Italian gelato and French croissants. Don’t be afraid to ask locals about recommendations about the best local restaurants and cafes.

As a general rule, avoid eating near major tourist attractions (such as the Louvre in Paris and the Trevi Fountain in Rome). You’re pretty safe to wandering down the streets, looking for restaurants and cafes where locals eat and knowing this is a good place to stop.

Please be safe

Europe is generally a safe place to travel, but taking precautions to keep you safe is always important. Beware of your belongings (especially in busy areas) and always beware of your surroundings. Especially in unfamiliar areas, avoid walking alone at night and be careful when using public transport. None of these tips should scare you. Consider it as a precaution to stay safe, especially if you are traveling alone.

Combine cities with small towns

Finally, when it comes to planning your trip, make sure to think about the outside of the box. Certainly there are cities you don’t want to miss (see Paris, London and Barcelona), but most of my favorite destinations are things you’ve never heard of before. Think of a small town (such as Bruges in Belgium) or a slightly smaller city (such as Utrecht in the Netherlands). These lesser known places can become your favorite stop for your trip!

Traveling to Europe in the summer is a once-in-a-lifetime trip. With some plans and preparation, you can make the most of your time on the ground and create memories you will be talking about for years to come!
