From Tuesday night into early Wednesday, a powerful G4 magnetic storm made the aurora visible far beyond its normal range. Sky watchers across Europe, from Ireland and the United Kingdom to Poland and Austria, witnessed the rare aurora borealis.
In Austria, the skies over Salzburg, Filzmos, Kaprun, Rauris and Korsasberg in Tyrol were colored in shades of red and pink. At this southern latitude, the sight was exceptional.
Forecasters said the display could return Wednesday and Thursday night as the storm continues to impact the Earth’s magnetic field. The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a severe magnetic storm warning, the second highest of five levels.
