Hundreds of Danish military veterans staged a silent protest in Copenhagen to protest President Donald Trump’s comments downplaying the role of non-US NATO forces in Afghanistan.
The veterans marched through the streets of Copenhagen from a memorial to fallen soldiers to the embassy, carrying Danish flags and banners reading “No Word”.
Once outside the American embassy, they planted Danish flags embroidered with the names of fallen Danish soldiers in flowerpots outside the embassy entrance.
Onlookers cheered as veterans and their families marched.
Organizers said comments about Greenland and the removal of the Danish flag that had previously been placed outside the embassy also sparked the protests.
The Danish army lost 44 soldiers in Afghanistan, the highest death toll per capita of any coalition partner, and a further eight died in Iraq.
