On Saturday, Dakar Fashion Week turned the Atlantic Ocean into a runway, with models showing off new designs from the decks of fishing boats off the coast of Senegal’s capital.
They anchored themselves on ropes while the waves lifted the small boat, giving the event a raw, playful energy. The show is the 23rd edition of the festival, which was founded by designer Adama Paris in 2002 to spotlight African fashion.
This year’s theme was the sea, and spectators also gathered on ships. Dakar remains a major force in African style, fueled by a long textile tradition and a culture that inspires art across West Africa. Local designers say the event has increased their visibility.
Many visitors, including industry professionals returning from overseas, praised the boat runway as a daring first.
