Authorities estimate more than 20 people were killed and about 100 injured when a high-speed train derailed in southern Spain on Sunday, jumping onto tracks heading in the opposite direction and colliding with an oncoming train.
Spanish train operator Adif said an evening train between Malaga and Madrid derailed and collided with a train heading from Madrid to Huelva, another city in southern Spain.
He said rescue operations were underway, adding that at least 73 injured passengers had been taken to six different hospitals.
MarΓa BelΓ©n Moya Rojas, the region’s head of civil protection, told Canal Sur that the accident occurred in an area that is difficult to reach.
Locals were bringing blankets and water to the scene to help the victims, she said.
