Two National Guard members were shot near the White House on Wednesday.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrissey initially confirmed their deaths in a social media post.
However, shortly afterward, he posted that reports regarding the condition of the two victims were “contradictory.”
A suspect who was taken into custody was also shot and suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. One National Guard member was shot in the head, a person familiar with the incident told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The shooting occurred at the corner of 17th and H streets in the city’s northwest quadrant, about two blocks northwest of the White House.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Muriel Bowser said local officials are closely monitoring the situation.
President Donald Trump, who was at a golf course in West Palm Beach, wrote in a Truth social media post that the “animal” who shot and killed the security guard “will pay a very high price.”
“God bless our National Guard, military and law enforcement. They are truly great people,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the President, stand with you!”
