To the Norwegian Fjords: Visit the Norwegian village of Flåm!

Must read

Norway is a country that has been on my travel list for a long time (I think everyone has!). This summer, I was lucky enough to take my mom on a cruise around the Norwegian fjords on Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse. The eight-night cruise begins in the south of England and heads north to Norway’s famous west coast. There you’ll find the charming village of Flåm, full of postcard-perfect towns and villages. This is definitely one of the most beautiful small villages in Norway and the perfect place to experience the famous Norwegian fjords.

Arrival in Flåm, Norway

We arrived early in the morning, and the weather in Norway is very unpredictable at the best of times (well, I guess at least in winter it’s snow, snow, and more snow). We set out first to overcome the possibility of rain later in the day. This small village is best known as the starting point for the Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway offers a relaxing 1-hour journey that offers beautiful views from above.

The village itself is very small, with only a few small eateries and a few souvenir shops for summer cruise ships. If you’re visiting for just a day like I was, I recommend putting on your sturdy walking shoes and walking the trails for great views of the town and small waterfront, or renting a bike and taking yourself along the waterfront to the large village of Aurland, 10 kilometers away.

Flam Attractions

The Flåm Railway is the third steepest railway line in the world, so it’s no surprise that most visitors to the village take the hour-long journey through the endless tunnels to admire the expansive views from above.

For those who prefer a more active escape, local kayak rentals and tours are offered daily throughout the summer. Another great way to see the fjord, this time not from the water.

Cycling is a great way to explore the area outside the village, especially if you choose to ride the 10 kilometers to nearby Aurland.

Those on a budget can also enjoy the variety of hikes in the area by visiting the tourist information center and choosing a hike that suits your fitness level and time.

For me, the best way to enjoy Flåm was to just wander around the village, the waterfront, and the short hiking trails nearby and soak it all up.
