To the Norwegian fjords: exploring Geiranger

Must read

If there’s a postcard village that’s more picturesque than any other in Norway, it’s Geiranger. This village is located on the edge of Norway’s most beautiful and photographed fjord. Geirangerfjord. While traveling along the coast of Norway, we stopped in Geiranger for just one day. However, it’s better than not going for a day at all, and we’ve found out why this fjord is considered a must-see for travelers exploring Norway’s fjords.

Arrival in Geiranger, Norway

If you’re interested in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site listing, you’ll be happy to know that Geiranger is not only on the list, but also has the highest score from National Geographic as Norway’s must-see village and fjord.

One of the best ways to reach Geirangerfjord is by water. While passing through this narrow fjord to reach the village, you can see how beautiful this narrow fjord is. We arrived early in the morning on a cruise ship, but if you’re traveling through Norway by car, you can arrive by ferry from Hellesylt or Vardar.

Geiranger Attractions

Although Geiranger is a small village, there are plenty of great things to do, especially for the adventurous traveler.

eagle swing

For some of the best views in all of Norway, follow the winding, narrow roads that lead to this amazing (and free!) observation deck. From here you can enjoy views of the town and fjord, but be aware that the weather plays an important role in how the views actually appear.

kayak

Another very popular way to experience Geirangerfjord is by taking a kayak tour with a local tour company. However, each season in Norway brings new challenges, so be sure to check dates and times in advance.

hiking

There are two main hiking trails around the fjord, Storseterfossen and Løsta, both of which can be reached in less than an hour. Both hikes offer great views, but be sure to wear appropriate footwear. The roads can become very slippery during the winter and shoulder seasons.

Day trip: Briksdal Glacier

For those who want to see further inland, we highly recommend a day trip to Briksdal Glacier. Here you can choose between a 1.5-hour hike (round trip) or a leisurely drive in a trawler to reach the glacier, the most accessible part of Jostedal Glacier. Along the way, you can see how much glacier has melted over the years. This is a great insight for climate change skeptics.

After your visit, we highly recommend watching the Norwegian film “The Wave”. Not only is this based on past events and events that scientists say will come true in the future, but it is also a very well made movie. However, we do not recommend viewing it before your visit.
