rear Several European countries have announced they are continuing to suspend postal services to the USthat was that CTT, a Portuguese counterpart, would follow the lawsuit.

In a statement shared on its website, the company said as of Tuesday, August 26th, it will “stop shipping consignment items, including goods to the United States, including all postal products, universal service parcels and international express parcels.”

The decision follows a cancellation of US President Donald Trump’s executive order, de minimis exemption system, which allowed shipments under $800 to enter the country without formal entry into customs. This will no longer be possible from August 29th.

Therefore, the Trump administration’s decision will include “all cargo for the US will now pay tariffs” and cargo for goods that will be led to Puerto Rico and other territories under the US administration (such as Guam, Samoa, the US Territory Islands).

As a result, all shipments of goods are “currently subject to customs duties and formal customs procedures”, with one exception: “personal gifts up to $100.” Shipping that includes documents only will also be exempt and “not subject to customs duties.”

However, according to CTT on the same page, “Shippings containing products to the US can still be sent using CTT Expresso’s Premium International Products.” This allows for shipments of up to 30 kilograms, but the fees will be “bear the recipient.”

Other European services will also suspend shipping

Like Portugal, EnglandFrance, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and the Netherlands also announced a temporary suspension of mail shipments to the US as of this week.

Belgium had already stopped sending parcels to US territory last Friday, but Swedish and Danish post offices also suspended most shipments to the US over the weekend.

Due to the cancellation of the “de minimis” exemption system, as of August 29th, all commercial packages for the US will be subject to corresponding tariffs based on the product’s origin and value.

This is expected to have a major impact on transatlantic e-commerce. As EuroNews has already reportedespecially for small and medium-sized businesses that export low-value products to the United States.

The White House said the measure was intended to combat irregular, abusive practices, such as the import of illegal drugs into the United States.

Trump’s announcement comes after the US and the European Union reached an agreement on a new trade deal, ending months of tensions.
