Greece, a country that is the historic birthplace of Western education, is partnering with artificial intelligence (AI) company Openai to bring technology to secondary schools and national startups.
The ChatGpt maker said Greece will be one of the first countries to use chatbots tailored to academic institutions.
Called ChatGpt Edu, it provides access to Openai’s latest models and supports GDPR compliance, Openai said in a press release, adding that the company will share best practices for safe and effective classroom use.
This move comes when the country is launched or when it plans to implement AI in classrooms. During the summer, Estonia I started training my teachers with AI use.
“From the Academy of Plato to the Lyceum of Aristotle, grease is the historical birthplace of Western education. Today, millions of Greeks use ChatGPT regularly, so the country once again shows its dedication to learning and ideas.”
“The Greek government is opening a new education chapter that prepares people to seize economic opportunities in the Intelligence Era.”
Openai said Greece has not yet implemented technology in schools. This year there will be pilots at high schools selected to reflect regional and socioeconomic diversity.
The first phase will focus on building AI literacy, helping teachers to increase productivity and integrate AI responsibly into their work, Openai said in a statement.
“Following the successful results, the programme is expected to expand across the Greek education system,” he added.
However, one of the main issues that teachers reported is that students use AI to write essays and do homework. This can be difficult for teachers to identify. AI can also structure things and spit out false information.
The company also came under hot water after a lawsuit was filed against the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, by the parents of 16, who committed suicide in April.
The parents claimed that ChatGpt created psychological dependence that led to teenage suicide.
Openai announced this week that it will add new parental controls.
In addition to the education plan, Openai said it would launch the “Greece AI Accelerator Program” on Saturday to support a new wave of local founders with AI.
Openai’s aim to the Greek government is to maintain the talent of Greek technological abilities as many are resting in pursuit of overseas opportunities.
The program included mentorship from Openai engineers, tailored workshops on scaling, compliance and safety, a visit to Openai headquarters in San Francisco, and connections between leading AI investors and innovators.
