One person has been killed and eight have been injured after Russia launched a new attack over the past 24 hours targeting Ukrainian cities.
Kiev says Moscow fired 54 waves of Iranian-made Shahed and decoy drones on Sunday, targeting at least eight locations. The Ukrainian air force says the country’s air defenses have intercepted 33 drones and confirmed that the remaining 21 people have attacked the target.
Donetsk Governor Vadim Firashkin says one civilian was killed in Pokrovsk in the overnight attack as Russia continues to target the eastern Ukraine region to deepen its foothold in the Donbas region.
Officials in Chernichv also announced that one man was injured in artillery fire in a Russian city early on Sunday. The attack targeted some of the city’s critical infrastructure and caused fires.
Ukrainian emergency services say the Kremlin has also made its second strike in the northern region, with firefighters working to control the flames and injure at least two people.
In Zaporizhzhia, three people were injured after a massive Russian air campaign targeted the city on Saturday. Gov. Ivan Fedorov said the city had been exposed to 523 strikes across 13 settlements, adding that the attack continued until Sunday.
Despite growing global pressure on the Kremlin and President Vladimir Putin, Russian attacks have intensified dramatically recently.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on Sunday in X that Moscow fired more than 1,500 drones, 1,280 guided air bombs and 50 different types of missiles last week alone.
The Ukrainian leader also pointed out that many of these Russian projectiles feature components produced by European countries and other allies.
“Thousands of foreign elements have been discovered with this weapon (over 132,000 items) from Europe, the US, China, Japan and dozens of other countries,” Zelenkie wrote.
Zelenskyy pointed out that this foreign support helped Russia create weapons on a massive scale “for fear of our people.” He also warned that if Russia does not stop, the threat would “certainly” spread to Europe and the Indo-Pacific countries.
“Strong sanctions are tools that help to stop this. We must cut off all possible supply routes and means of avoiding sanctions and put pressure on the countries and individual businesses that support them.”
He also called for further pressure on Russia to push them to the negotiation table and end their full-scale invasion until the fourth year.
“We consider the 19th EU sanctions package to be truly painful and join the Europeans in the US,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ukraine also shares that it has achieved great military success on the ground. The country’s military intelligence – Har – announced on Sunday that it had destroyed three Russian MI-8 helicopters in the occupied Crimea.
The MI-8 US is widely used by Russia for transport, combat support and reconnaissance missions.
They also shared that it is a radar station in Crimea, a mobile early warning system used by Russia to detect stealth aircraft and cruise missiles early over long distances.
