We arrived in Norway’s beautiful waterfront town of Ålesund in the early morning hours of autumn. Immediately my eyes lit up like a child on Christmas morning, I looked at the Art Nouveau architecture from afar and began to plan the order of work for the day in my head. Introducing Ålesund, Norway!
Ålesund (pronounced ar-sund) is surrounded by water, so it’s no surprise that the town is a major fishing port. The city center has a very unique Art Nouveau style, and after a fire in the early 20th century, the entire town was rebuilt in the architectural style of the time. With its unique combination of interesting architecture and dramatic water surroundings, the town has quickly become a favorite for visitors to and from Norway.
Things to do in Ålesund
Although Ålesund is a small town, there are enough places to explore Ålesund for a full day. Start with the stunning views of the city early in the morning or the colorful skies at the end of the day, then wander the streets, enjoy some knick-knacks shopping, or even take a day trip nearby if you have more time.
Climb the 418 steps to the Felstur Observation Deck
If a picture speaks a thousand words, you’re already convinced that this is one of the best views of the city you’ll ever come across. My favorite part of visiting this town was walking up the 418 steps that lead to the Fjellstua observation deck. The walk is completely free and starts from the city center and can be accessed from the town park. (city park).
Visit the Art Nouveau Center
After a fire destroyed almost the entire city center in 1904, Ålesund as we know it today is a dreamlike modernist building steeped in Art Nouveau in every aspect. The town center is full of beautiful and colorful buildings of this architectural style, and it’s worth walking around on your own to admire them. Walking tours are held daily for those who would like to learn a little more about the city centre, the fire and its subsequent Art Nouveau rebirth.

The town is fairly compact, so it doesn’t take long before you come across the beautiful port of Ålesund. Here you can wander along the water’s edge, admire seaside culture and, if you’re lucky, enjoy the summer sunshine. The Ålesund Museum is also a great place to escape bad weather if you can’t make it to the city on one of those rare sunny days.
