I visited Mount Bromo Day trip from Surabaya As the beginning of my adventure in East Java with Andre. This volcano is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful (and active!) volcanoes in Indonesia.
Indonesia sits at the top Pacific Ring Fire And it is home to around 129 volcanoes in an impressive overall 18,000 islands That makes up this country. Mount Bromo is the most popular volcano to visit, and it is important to plan your trip in advance to make the most of your visit, as it will allow travelers to have reasonable access to Java. The volcano is active and last erupted on July 15th, 2019, so make sure it’s safe before your visit!

Day Trip to Mount Bromo
We landed in Indonesia (from Australia) at 5pm on a popular route to Bali’s Denpasar Airport. From there we moved to a domestic airport (which is next to an international airport, but technically separate). It was a short, one-hour flight from Bali to Surbaya. This was one of the best destinations to base yourself on your own to visit Mount Bromo.
We landed in Surbaya at 8pm in the evening and quickly collected our bags 40 minutes’ drive to the city centre. It only took us 2 hours to sleep before we checked in. The tour was ready at 12am. If you’re a regular jet setter, this will be a breeze, but if you prefer a slower trip (or sleep!), you may want to consider a restful night and spend the day and book a Mount Bromo tour the next day.
The journey to Mount Bromo takes about four hours. The first three hours are spent by car, then the fourth hour at the old school of the 1950s is at the top of the sunrise perspective. There is no better time to visit a volcano than sunrise, so despite the early start, this is totally worth it!

Sunrise over Mt Bromo
We reached our point of view at least 45 minutes before sunrise, and made time to stop the coffee and cup noodles before heading towards the main event perspective. There is a Sunrise Viewing Platform Mount Penangjakan It also has extremely accessible to all levels of fitness. Of course, there is the option to hike the sandy hills to find your own private viewing point. We visited on a Saturday. It meant more people (locals and foreigners), so if you can avoid the weekend then do so!

Crater rim
After seeing the sun rise, casting beautiful orange and purple tints above the volcano, we returned to our Land Rover and began our descent towards the edge of the crater. A journey can take somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes depending on how many travelers are visiting per day. There is only one road up and down the mountain to reach the point of view, so much of your trip to the Crater Rim is spent on the line of cars (so I recommend using the bathroom before leaving the top!)

Once you reach the crater, it takes another 30-40 minutes to walk to the top of the crater rim. Walks involve crossing dusty plains that are often plagued by sand storms, so wear sneakers, sunglasses and scarves to avoid dust in your eyes. After that you will need to climb to reach the summit. You can see inside the crater and prevent people from falling to take photos with the railing.

What to pack for a day trip to Mount Bromo
Sunglasses – To protect your eyes during a sandstorm.
scarf – To protect your face during the sandstorm (trust me, this is handy!)
Warm clothes – We missed a note about this and spent the first half of the morning shaking. The weather here is much cooler, especially early in the morning.
Walking shoes – The hike to reach the edge of Mount Bromo and the crater is not much involved, but the base of the crater is incredibly dusty, so closed shoes are a must. I was wearing my new one Merrellbear Access Runner Perfect for days that include a variety of activities.

Stay in Surabaya
You can take a day trip to Mount Bromo from two cities, Maran and Surabaya. Both are major cities, with many flights arriving daily from Indonesia and even overseas. We decided to stay in Surabaya as it is a flight only an hour from Denpasar, Bali.
Although it is hardly visible in the city itself, it has a lot of history. I recommend dropping it on Majapahit Hotel Let’s take a look at the history of Dutch colonization and how this has impacted Indonesia as it is today. As far as hotels go, this is the flashiest (and therefore the expensive) hotel, and if you’re planning on crashing only for one night on your way to Mount Bromo, there are plenty of 3* and 4* alternatives.
