Clashes broke out between demonstrators and police in Milan’s Corbetto district on Friday after a demonstration against the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The brief confrontation came at the end of a peaceful march by thousands of people protesting the environmental impact of the Games and the presence of US agents in Italy.
Some demonstrators threw objects and firecrackers at police, who responded with water cannon and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Earlier, a group of masked demonstrators set off smoke bombs and firecrackers on a bridge overlooking a construction site about 800 meters from the Olympic Village, which is home to about 1,500 athletes.
As tensions escalated, police forces moved back and forth several times before the situation was brought under control.
