8 places to visit in Portugal

Must read

I’d be kidding if I said Portugal wasn’t one of my favorite destinations in Europe. Great food, great people, great coastline… there’s really nothing I hate in this country. After visiting Portugal several times over the past few years, I have found some outstanding favorites that will make you want to go to Portugal on your next Euro adventure… So here’s it! 8 places to visit in Portugal!

Lisbon Portugal

1. Lisbon

Departing from Lisbon is not only the most convenient way to start a visit to Portugal, but it also gives you great insight into the country and its people. My favourite neighborhood is by far the Alfama, my favorite restaurant is a minibar, and my favorite food is the traditional Portuguese tart. If you try all three, I promise you it’s never bad.

Sintra Cascais Day Trip

2. Sintra

A short drive from the Portuguese capital is a gorgeous, charming small town known as Sintra. The building is playful and colorful, and the small streets lined with cafes are perfect for human observation. I could have spent the whole day here if I meandered down the slopes.

3. Lagos

In my opinion, Lagos is Portugal’s most impressive beaches. The colorful red rock cliffs, secluded beaches and year-round sunlight make this one of my most visited places in the Mediterranean. If you’re looking for a place to stay, we checked in for a girls’ weekend at Villa Vita Parc. It was one of my favourite holidays ever.

4. Pastais de Bellen

One of the most popular places on the outskirts of Lisbon and one of the absolute must-visit places (I’ll say not to exaggerate it, but be sure to go!) is Pastis de Belem, home to the famous Portuguese tarts. Because of the constant production, the center of the tart is warm and egg-rich, with constant lines of tourists and locals waiting to get a full bag.

5. Douro

If you want to rent a car in Portugal and explore the beautiful region, check out the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. The views are really amazing, but as usual in Portugal, the food and wine are just as fascinating.

6. Pena Palace

If you’re going to Sintra (I highly recommend doing so), you definitely shouldn’t miss Pena Palace, which is on the top of a hill overlooking the surroundings. The colorful castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. The photo is proof of this.

7. Porto

Outside of Lisbon, Porto is one of Portugal’s most popular cities. With its medieval past and incredibly authentic riverside, the city is undoubtedly one of Western Europe’s most attractive cities.

Aveiro Portugal

8. Aveiro

Located on the west coast of Portugal, this gorgeous, typical coastal town is surprisingly unknown. Expect the colorful boat-to-door canals, intricate architecture, and very welcoming locals. If you want to discover hidden gems, this is the place to go.
