At least three people have been killed and 20 people have been injured after Portugal’s capital Lisbon derailed on Wednesday.
President Marcelo Rebello de Sousa expressed his sadness to those affected by the incident.
A yellow and white tram lay on a narrow road moving up and down the steep urban hills, Portuguese television showed.
Its sides and top were partially crumpled. Dozens of emergency workers were on the scene.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known, local media said. It reportedly occurred at the start of evening rush hour around 6pm.
The performance, known as the Glória, can carry over 40 people sitting and standing.
It is commonly used by Lisbon residents.
