Chinese President Xi Jinping said the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 aims to build a consensus and ignite momentum for cooperation, and aims to create a blueprint for development as he addressed international guests and world leaders at the opening banquet of Tianjin’s port city on Sunday.
“Since its founding, SCO has continued to tackle the spirit of Shanghai, strengthening solidarity and mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation, and actively participating in international and regional issues,” Xi said.
“SCO has grown into a critical force in promoting a new type of international relations and building communities with a shared future for humanity.”
Xi adds that the summit is at a critical time of global hostility, conflict and instability, and points out that event leaders are on a critical mission to fill gaps and advance solutions for development.
“We are in charge of a key mission: to build consensus among all stakeholders, ignite momentum for cooperation, and create a blueprint for development. Tomorrow I will join my colleagues at a co-worker conference meeting.”
“We will also convene ‘SCO Plus’ meetings with non-SCO members and leaders of international organizations. We will focus on ways to strengthen cooperation, promote development and improve global governance,” said the Chinese leader.
The Welcome Banquet, held at Tianjin’s Meiji Conference and Exhibition Centre, was attended by more than 20 heads of state, their spouses, and more than 10 leaders of international organizations.
The chiefs of ten countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will continue consultations on Monday to discuss everything from addressing ongoing global issues like the wars in Gaza and Ukraine.
Since its founding 24 years ago, its goals and programs have remained dark, and its size and influence have been growing, even though its name recognition remains low. Many view it as China’s way of challenging the US-led, established global diplomatic system, and is part of Beijing’s plan to promote its name as a global player in the international arena.
Founded in Shanghai in June 2001, SCO has expanded from six founding members to families in 26 countries, with 10 members, two observers and 14 dialogue partners, spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.
Among its members are major emerging markets and developing countries such as China, Russia and India, SCO represents almost half the world’s population and a quarter of the world’s economy.
