Singapore has lots of strange and wonderful local dishes to try during your stay. Here are the top 10 carefully selected foods to try in Singapore: Disclosure: As a vegetarian, I was unable to try the meat dishes selected for this feature. But for all meat lovers, these non-vegetable-friendly dishes are highly recommended by Singaporean locals – thank Josephine!

Try Singaporean foods

breakfast:

1. Soft boiled (slappy) eggs and kaya toast

There is one main traditional breakfast in Singapore. Soft boiled eggs (round lurp from the bowl) and kaya toast. Remember the good old days when bread was white, thinly sliced and foamed with butter as a child? Traditionally you eat your kaya toast this way, but the spread is sweet coconut flavor with a good dose of melted butter – of course these days you can order brown bread if you want!
Best Kaya Toast and Slappy Eggs in Singapore:
Killliney Kopitiam: 67 Killiney Road, Singapore 239525
Chinmee chin candy: 204 East Coast Road, 428903 Singapore (closed Monday)
He’s toasting.: 18 China Street #01-01, Far East Square, Singapore 049560 (There are over 30 Ya Kun stores in Singapore)

2. Chwee Kway (Suisane lit. Water Rice Cake)

The second breakfast dish in Singapore is a hot vegetable-friendly alternative (although I’ve asked thousands of times), and is regularly seen at Hawker Centres in Singapore and Johor. The base is also steamed rice topped with chai poh (preserved radish) and hot chili peppers. Younger generations avoid this carbohydrate-rich dish, but it’s definitely worth trying to taste the old Singaporean taste.
Best chwee kueh stall:
Jian Bo Shui Kueh: 30 Seng Poh Road, #02-05, Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centers (168898)

lunch:

3. BakKut Teh (Bak Kut Teh Lit. Meat Bone Tea/Pork Ribs Soup)

There are many stories about the origins of Bak Kut Teh, but my favorite is that in the old Singapore era, starving bee food came at a stall selling pork noodles and begged for food. The stall owner himself was in poverty, but wanted to help him, so he boiled some leftovers on the pork bones and threw some cheap spices to give it a broth flavor. And the rest is history!
Best bak kut teh food stalls:
Song f Bakkate To:11 New Bridge Road #01-01, Singapore 059383
Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup: 208 Rangoon Road, Hong Building Singapore 218453 (closed Monday)

4. Pomelo salad (vegetable friendly)

You can’t make a mistake with Pomelo salad. Pomelo is like grapefruit, but instead of sour it is sweet. It’s great in Asian salads and is a common ingredient for Singaporeans in the main course. Try it, it will surprise you!

5. Wanton Mee (Wanton Noodle)

Ah, Wanton noodles! These dry noodles, a distinctive dish in the eastern part of Hong Kong, are soaked in a sweet sauce, topped with slices of pork and wangtong dumpling (pork filled), and served with a small portion of the soup on the side. If you like pork, it’s great!

World of Wonderlust visited Singapore as a guest of the Singapore Tourism Board. Some of these recommendations have been proposed by the STB, but my opinion, as always, is my own.
