Thai state prosecutors formally indicted 23 individuals and businesses in accusations related to the collapse of a Bangkok office building that was destroyed after the earthquake, killing at least 92 people.
The partially constructed skyscraper, which was to house the new state audit office, was the only one that had completely collapsed on March 28th due to the 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
Those charged include the project’s chief contractor. It is the 10th China Railway Company, a joint venture in China and the project, with Italian and Thai Development Co. Ltd.
Italian development president Premchai Karnasta and local director of China Railway No. 10, Zhang Chuanling, along with other companies, including designers, engineers and other companies.
The charges of the charges include professional negligence in a charge, oversight, or construction practice that does not comply with engineering standards, taking risks to others and causing death, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office.
Additional charges include the use of forgery and forged documents.
Premchai’s indictment is his second major entanglement. In 2019, he was convicted of killing a sheltered animal and illegally possessing a weapon while hunting at a wildlife sanctuary where he served in prison for three years.
Some of those charged on Thursday had already surrendered to police and denied any misconduct.
An investigation by police and other officials found that design and structural flaws were behind the collapse of the building, with some of the officially approved designs not being implemented.
The earthquake killed more than 3,700 people in Myanmar and caused great damage in Mandalay, the country’s second largest city, and the capital, Nepidau.
