One of the top 3 most read blog posts on World of Wanderlust may surprise you that it’s a compilation list of the best places to visit in South America. This list is the 25 South American locations you must visit and is consistently ranked as one of the most read articles on the site, and has continued to do so since it first published in 2016. So, where is the most visited country in South America? We did some research to investigate for you.

Most visited countries in South America
1. Argentina
7.4 million visitors (2019)
Argentina is the number one most visited country in South America, with over 7 million visitors in 2019 ahead of a travel plan that will halt the pandemic. And while you might be surprised to see Argentina take the number one position ahead of Brazil, the country is extremely popular and has a lot to offer to visitors. Start your journey in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. And from there, check out some of the natural wonders the country has to offer, like Iguazu Falls and Patagonia.

2. Brazil
6.4 million visitors
The second place comes in Brazil, owning some of the continent’s most famous cities and destinations. And yes, we’re talking about Rio de Janeiro. It has an incredible reputation around the world for its natural beauty and colorful nightlife. However, there are also many other destinations to visit in the country, such as Buzios and Sao Paulo.

3. Chile
4.5 million visitors
As perhaps the most diverse country in South America, Chile is full of bucket list items to check off. From Santiago, you can explore many of the countries via connected flights at several top spots down Easter Island, the Atacama Desert and Patagonia south. Also, if you’re interested in skiing or snowboarding, there’s Valparaiso, the country’s artistic hub.

4. Peru
4.4 million visitors
It is Peru that comes close behind Chile. And given the vast number of visitors who challenge Machu Picchu every year, it’s not a surprise to consider Peru as one of the most popular countries to visit in South America. But if you feel more adventurous, head to Iquitos and use this as a base to explore the Amazon River (trust me, you will not regret it!)

5. Columbia
4.2 million visitors
Colombia has struggled to attract visitors in the past, but this is changing rapidly. Nowadays, drug cartels have far less influence on the country and politics, as they date back to the Pablo Escobar era, which quickly attracts visitors from around the world. Bogota and Medellin are beginning to turn into a big metropolis, so you might want to trade them for Cartagena in the Old Town (pictured above).

6. Uruguay
3.1 million
It is also popular with the list of the most visited countries in South America, and is upcoming Uruguay. If you are looking for a destination where you can go back in time and enjoy a more relaxed pace than its neighbors, you may venture south to Uruguay. Here you can enjoy horseback riding, spectacular coastline and slow pace.

7. Ecuador
2.1 million
With its tropical beaches and abundant marine wildlife, Ecuador is another popular choice for South American travelers. This country attracts people from all over the world who are looking for adventure in all its shapes and shapes. Our favourite picks include Quito and Galapagos if you’re interested in diving.

8. Paraguay
1.2 million
For adventure, you might consider leaving a little more beaten path and adding Paraguay to your list of destinations. Travelers taking risks at lesser known destinations will be delighted to be surprised as they will be rewarded with a more vibrant adventure without tourist traps. Here you can enjoy spectacular day hikes, cultural markets and delicious local food (there are a few reasons to visit!)
