European Union leaders issued a joint statement ahead of the US Russia Summit this Friday to highlight their unwavering support for Ukraine. All EU leaders registered in the text, except in Hungary, where they had reserved their ideas.

An EU 26 statement welcomed President Trump’s efforts to “end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and achieve just and lasting peace and security in Ukraine.”

The leader emphasized the integrity of Ukraine’s territory and emphasized the need for lasting peace in regards to international law.

“We must not forcefully change international borders,” the statement said.

Leaders also looked back at the upcoming Alaska Summit between the US and Russia, saying the path to peace could not be decided without Ukraine. Over the past two days, the EU has pushed for President Zelenskyy to be included in the talks. The leader also demanded that diplomatic solutions must protect the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe.

The text also gave clear indication that the EU is willing to provide further political, financial and military support to Ukraine for self-defense and to request security assurances in Kiev. Furthermore, they pledged their support for Ukraine’s path to EU membership.

Hungary rejected the idea of an EU statement before the Alaska Summit

The statement was drafted by EU Council President Antonio Costa and agreed by the leaders last night. However, Hungary refused to sign up.

“Hungary is not associated with this statement” – the text concluded.

Euroneus contacted the Hungarian government to comment on the issue. One EU diplomatic source said he is not convinced of the opportunity for Hungary to issue a joint EU statement before consultations.

Previously, Hungary systematically rejected the EU statement seeking military or financial support for Ukraine or had requested assistance to Kyiv’s EU passes. The Viktor Orbán government is also actively campaigning against the European Union’s aspirations of war-torn countries, stating that Ukrainian accession will be an economic and security disaster for Hungary and Europe. The Hungarian government has also concluded a non-binding poll called VOKS2025 on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. There, 95% of the more than 2 million respondents said they were opposed to Ukraine, which is participating in the EU.
