Lake Bled is one of the most popular destinations in Slovenia. The iconic blue lake is home to small islands, an impressive castle overlooking the lake, and plenty of great activities in the summer. Here are some of the best things to do in Lake Bled to help you plan your trip.

Hiking to Mara Osonica
If you want to enjoy the view of the lake from above, there is no better way to see Lake Bled than from above. Mara Osonica. The round trip hike takes about an hour, but it takes a little longer to stay at the top and enjoy the views. The hike is easy, but quite steep. Be sure to plan your visit at the beginning or end of the day to avoid the summer sun.

Try Slovenian cuisine at Vila Bled
When you visit Lake Bled, you are in the Goręjskan region of Slovenia. There are lots of great local dishes that are perfect for sampling the flavors of the region. Gyoza stands out on the menu, and many of them are hearty. Huge. Vila Bled has a beautiful restaurant with one of the best views on Bled Island and is the perfect place to enjoy traditional cuisine with one of the best views in the city. For dessert, try the famous bread cake. A pastry cake filled with a delicious custard center. This cake is so delicious that we’ll probably be talking about it for months to come.

Pletna boat ride to Bled Island
Paddling around the lake is more difficult than it looks (more on that later). If you feel more like it rowed Once you arrive at your destination, board the Pletna boat for a leisurely journey to Bled Island. These boats are located on the island side of the lake and are constantly running to and from the island.

Row your own boat to Bled Island
Feeling like you’re gaining independence? Another great way to reach the island is by rowing yourself on one of the rental boats available in the same area. I stayed at Villa Bled and enjoyed the complimentary 1 hour rental. However, we probably only stayed for half the time (it’s much more difficult than it looks!) Regardless of the circular path we mistakenly chose, it was a really fun way to experience the lake and enjoy the summer sun.

Visit the Vintgar Valley
Just a 10-15 minute drive from Lake Bled, Vintgar Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. Due to its proximity to Lake Bled, it can also be reached by bicycle or on foot. The canyon is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the summer, with shorter hours during the colder months. During the summer months, this place gets crowded with tourists, so arriving early is highly recommended.

Visit Lake Bled Castle
There are many amazing castles to explore in Slovenia, but there’s no denying that Bled Castle is one of the highlights. Perched idyllicly on one of the highest points surrounding the island, Bled Castle is a living museum. According to sources, this is the oldest castle in Slovenia, and thanks to the restoration process it is kept in excellent condition. Another perk: the view of Lake Bled from the castle is iconic.

Try the famous breadcake
If you haven’t heard yet, consider yourself warned. Bread cake is a calorie-packed feast of deliciousness that cannot and should not be ignored. The cake features a pastry base and top, a delicious custard center and a creamy layer on top. It’s incredibly rich, sweet, and even more delicious. You can try this cake at almost any restaurant or cafe around the lake, but we highly recommend going to Café Belvedere for the cake (the view is amazing).

Let’s ring the bell on Bled Island
No matter how you arrive on the island, be sure to climb the approximately 100 steps to the tower and ring the bell at the top of the church. Avid bell ringers allow you to hear the chimes of bells around the lake throughout the day, adding a wonderful touch to the lakeside atmosphere.

spend the night at the lake
Whether you’re staying here permanently or just for one night, we can’t recommend checking into Villa Bled enough. The villa enjoys a prime location on the lake, with many rooms offering direct views of Bled Island. Wake up every morning and walk straight down the stairs to the lake or enjoy the private beach right in front of the hotel and complimentary boat rentals.

Take a day trip to Triglav National Park
Triglav National Park is a short drive from Lake Bled and is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in Bled for more than two days. There are some great day hikes within the park. Or, if you prefer to sightsee at a leisurely pace, Lake Bohinj is a great place to relax away from the crowds of Lake Bled.
